MARCH 2024

Wellbeing Warrior: Sabrina Sanford

Paul was nominated by Deanna Lushmann for his remarkable wellbeing journey. Paul suffered from a serious medical condition in February 2022, and underwent surgery that unfortunately resulted in paralysis from the waist down - and doctors told him he may never be able to walk again. Not only was Paul dealing with his own medical challenges, but his wife was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in February 2023.  Despite all of this, Paul was determined to walk again.  Through physiotherapy, training and the memory of his wife, Paul was able to not only walk again, but he completed a 5K at the Goose Bay Trapline Marathon in October 2023 - and walked the entire race! He was joined by some of his fellow fire fighters - the same fire fighters who built a ramp for Paul when he first came back home from treatment in his wheelchair.

Deanna shared in her nomination, “I feel he is really deserving of this award. If there is anybody who is a Wellbeing Warrior, it's Paul!!” Paul's story is truly inspiring, and we are honored to recognize Paul as the January Wellbeing Warrior!

FEBRUARY 2024 WELLBEING WARRIOR

Deidra Brown

Deidra has been focusing on her physical and mental wellbeing this year with the goal to be healthier for herself and better for her family, friends, colleagues, and employees.

Her journey began by taking a look at the habits that contributed to her becoming unhealthy and started making small, reachable goals:

  • Talk with her doctor

  • Remove sweets like cookies, candy, and soda from her diet

  • Stop late night snacking

  • Start walking for 20 minutes and eventually increase the time/duration

  • Take “Coffee Break” with colleagues two times per week by getting up and moving with colleagues.

Since Deidra started, she has not only lost 15 pounds, but also improved her nutrition, physical activity, and social connections. Despite challenging days, she stays motivated and positive to reach her goals. One tool that has been helpful for her is having a “Healthier Me” background on her phone!

Deidra shared “I am striving to just become a better and healthier me. I don't want to look or be like anyone else but want to be able to feel good in my own body. I am not looking for a certain number on the scale but just looking for that moment when I feel great inside and out. What may be right for one person may not be for me and I have accepted that."

Help us celebrate and recognize Deidra for all her efforts throughout her wellbeing journey!

MARCH 2024 WELLBEING WARRIOR

Sabrina Sanford

Congratulations to Sabrina Sanford for being named the March Wellbeing Warrior!  Sabrina was nominated by fellow Serco employee Ashley Sonnier, who shared how Sabrina has been an inspiration to many around Serco.

"I am nominating Sabrina Sanford because she has been a pillar of wellness on the contract for a very long time. She shared her own success with me on losing weight and how exercise helped her to reduce stress and keep her alert at work. From clean eating and working out to career progression and teaching positive mental health habits Sabrina is a true inspiration in how to live healthy and happy."

Recently Sabrina has started a lunchtime walking group to encourage colleagues who work remote to get exercise and find community. She has been heard to state that talking while walking is great in helping those who are remote employees feel less alone and that togetherness has become something that many members of the team look forward to every week. Sabrina's wellness journey encompasses all aspects of being healthy including highlighting the Rise to the Challenge methods, teaching others to journal, encouraging drinking water in meetings and helping others to gain the courage to grow in their careers.

Sabrina has encouraged healthy living, community and fellowship in everyone around her without asking for anything in return. Her journey has been an inspiration to her teams and everyone around her. Sabrina has continued to inspire people with her journey and encourages everyone around her to eat healthy, work-out and care for themselves.

Congratulations and thank you to Sabrina for not only embracing wellness but motivating others to live healthy.

APRIL 2024 WELLBEING WARRIOR

Claudia Cisneros

Congratulations to Claudia Cisneros for being named the Wellbeing Warrior for April!

Claudia’s journey to focus on her physical wellbeing began when she took the first step to join her husband at a powerlifting gym to try something new – and it has been the best decision for her.  Not only did she hit her first major goal of consistency in the first six months, she has also made huge progress on her weightlifting goals and improved her strength. She started with doing regular body weight squats to then slowly being able to lift the 45lb bar with no added weight and now today being able to squat 155lbs 5 times for 3 sets!  Claudia said “The right support and environment has also played a huge part and for that I am so grateful!”

In addition, she also shared that family is her motivation. She wants to show her kids that you can do just about anything you are willing to work hard for and stick to, but also show her daughter that being a healthy and strong woman is not determined by just a number on the scale.

Claudia said this has been so important for her because it is the first time that she started working out without the goal of weight loss. Instead, she is focusing on the creating new habits – going to the gym consistently and setting weightlifting goals – and now enjoys her time at the gym.  She’s excited to see where she will be when she hits her next big goal of one year with strength training and powerlifting.

Congratulations Claudia on all that you have accomplished so far – and the many more milestones to come on your wellbeing journey!
